School: IRC Tutorial
Welcome to the dummies' guide to IRC (internet relay chat), this is a ridiculously complex aspect of computer geekiness that, nevetheless, is pretty simple once you learn the basics.
I must stress however that this is for absolute beginners, people who, like me, find themselves incapable of understanding the mysterious world that is cyberspace but are desperate to use this nifty little chatroom.
Personally I leech as much manga as I can cram into this plastic box and it took me months to figure out what the hell all this irc stuff was about!
I take it for granted that if you've found this tutorial and have actually bothered to read this far then you also have a very good reason for wanting to use irc as well, so here we go!

N.B. I use MIRC so that is the program I am writing this guide for, it is possible that other programs have variations, in which case - i'm sorry. Also i will include a section on leeching manga, because my puny brain also found that confusing!
Step 1
Download the irc client: this is just the program for your computer and can be found at any number of websites, for free.
If you want to shop around use a search engine (i.e. google) and i promise you'll be swamped within seconds. Here is the one I used:
http://www.mirc.com/get.html
Ok, install and run etc. then open 'Mirc' it should be floating round on your desktop but, if not, using 'run' and browsing programs should track it down ;)
mirc will open and a grey box (with a scary guy's head in it) will appear, click 'continue' and the 'options' box (also grey) should appear.
Step 2
Step 1-3 checklist
Step 3
Ok, at the left of this new box there will be a list of options. Make sure you are in 'Connect'. Here, type in a false 'full name' and 'email address' it really doesn't matter what you type.
Now chose a nickname; this is like a username and will appear as your identity in any channel you chat in. Then chose an 'alternative' nickname, in case you're really unoriginal and someone already has you first choice XD
Next, in the left hand pannel click on 'servers', this is a subheading of 'Connect', so ensure that you have opened the 'connect' file thingy.
Where it asks for an 'Irc Network' select 'irchighway' from the scrolldown list: THIS IS NOT THE ONLY SERVER, and if you have a specific channel you wish to join then it will tell you which server (e.g. #timelessrules@ircdeity etc) however, many of the manga channels i use are on 'highway' and the network can always be changed as this option box should open every time you run irc or can be selected by clicking on the 'folder&hammer' symbol at the top of the main screen.
1. mirc client downloaded
2. options box
3. false name and email, two nicknames
4. 'server', network - irchighway

Don't worry, you are doing well, by this time i was panicking!!!
Step 4
Now we're going to fiddle with the options, follow closely:
1. 'Options' - tick reconnect...
                    pop up...
                    move to...
type '6667' in 'default port' (do this because mine is like this and i don't know why)
2. 'local info' - tick 'local host'
                        'server'
3.Now the next big folder, click on 'IRC'
4. tick - 'auto-join channel on invite'
          'rejoin when kicked'
I don't know what all the other boxes do and it probably isn't too important ;D
5. Go into 'catcher' under 'IRC'
6. tick - 'chat links' 'enable support' and 'confirm requests'
Step 5
Important for all leechers or anyone who wants to download anything off irc:
1. Click on 'DCC'
2. Select 'auto-get file' (and 'minimize' if you want')
3. Select 'on chat request' - 'show chat dialogue'
4. Go into 'server' under 'DCC'
5. Select 'enable DCC server'
          listen on port 59
          send, chat and fserve
and, because mine is 'perform dns lookup'

YAY, you have now set up the damn thing to actually work >does celebratory dance< now thing's will get real confusing! XD
Yay, now close the options box, then
1. click on the lightning symbol at the top; when this is whole it means you are not connected, when it is split in two it means that you are. Connect yourself.
2. after a short pause lots of writing will shoot down the screen, sit back, ignore, and try to look confident so people will think you are a computer genius
3.now, some channels don't let you play unless your nickname is registered so, in the text box at the bottom of the screen type: /msg nickserv register >password< >actual, working email address<
(n.b. all people with same IQ as me - replace the >< and inside writing with a personal password and >< with actual email address so the nickname server can send you a code for registering your nick and stop others from using it
4. go to email address and get code, click it or enter it in channel. Now, everytime you sign on just type: /msg nickserv identify >password<
5. Brilliant, you are doing great!
6. Have some chocolate
Step 6
Step 7
Right, how to connect to the channel you want, for this exercise we will use #nakama@irchighway:
1. in the text box type /j #nakama
all this does is ask for you to join the channel and, sure enough a second window should pop open, usually filled with exciting coloured writing at the top - yay!
2. In this manga scanlation download irc channel (what a mouthful) there are several simple commands:
if you want to chat with whosoever is in the same channel just type in text box of that window and hit enter - your message will appear inside the window and ppl may reply - saying hi is nice internet ettiquette btw
3. if you type !rules then the rules of the channel will appear in the window - this can be helpful to ensure that you don't do something inadvertantly forbidden and get 'kicked' or even banned from the channel
4. for leechers, if you want to list all those serving manga/anime/the file you want type: !list
depending on size of channel a whole load of writing will appear saying things like:
TimelessDD: get all your manga needs here trigger: /ctcp hahalolol i'm crazy :users 1/4 queues 24/50 sends 1/1
Step 8
Right, now, in irc you copy a section of text just by highlighting it with your mouse then right-clicking in the text window and selecting 'paste'
This is what you need to do with what clever people call 'triggers'. these triggers open up private 'chat windows', which basically let you select the files you want to download:
1. a trigger always begins with /ctcp and is usually a different colour to the rest of the text in that line - highlight only up to the colour change, otherwise the trigger won't work and some string of jibberish will appear in the main chat stream - this can be annoying so just take care when copying
2. enter the trigger in the text box and hit enter, a private window should open, if it invites you to participate click yes or accept
3. now another window will open, and a list of instructions will appear, read if you want, they may be helpful ;X
IN-CHAT COMMANDS:
these are the commands you will need to know to navigate in this new window and select your files:
dir - this is the first thing you type, it means directory and gives a listing of what is in the main 'folder thingy'
cd - type this in the text of this window and follow it with the name of the new folder you want to access
get - then type/paste the file name you want

e.g.
so you open a window:

Timeless Deity: welcome to my chat
commands are: dir, list, @find, cd, queues, my_q, quit, exit
please type EXIT before closing the window or else you WILL CRASH ME
If you leave the >nakama< channel all your sends, gets and queues will be cancelled
                we all love manga rararara
TimelessDD: [/^^\] (this is the main folder)

Newbie: exit
TimelessDD: byebye
DCCsession is now closed

oooh, so scary huh?
you can close window by pressing 'x' after typing exit but remember to stay in the channel where all the servers are listed, thats the second window that opened where you can chat with all those other people
Well, thats all you need for now. If any irc-gurus are passing through, or if something isn't working for you, please let me know, either by email or through the guestbook.
Thanx
